Let’s Talk Mental!!
Full disclosure for this post. I made this recipe a while back, right before my mental breakdown. This post has never met the light of sun until today because of my SAD. SAD stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder, which I prefer to call “She’s A Damn b*tch – SAD”. During her visit, I couldn’t function probably as a human being. You know things aren’t going so well when people keep asking you “Hey, are you ok”, “Do you need help”, “What’s wrong? You aren’t bubbly as usual”, “Do you need a day off? Stop working, you’re going home”.
It’s hard to talk about this kind of things because it’s boring, but let’s vocalize it because mental health is as important as our physical being.
The only good thing about this period of time was that I didn’t have any suicidal thoughts. It wasn’t because I was strong, but as a queer person I have been through the whole thing and get sick off it. I was fully aware of my self-worth, and I knew for a fact that these thoughts wouldn’t last forever. The Queen has her downtime, but the Queen is the Queen. She’s fierce.
As of today, I feel way better now and more grateful than ever. I feel like myself again. I’m in love with life. I have a shelter, a good job, wonderful co-workers, friends, and family (still haven’t had a boyfriend YET, but I’m working on that shit lol). It’s good.
Coming back to this post, I think it really meant to be for everything that happened. The inspiration behind this recipe was the fact I donated my hair on my 22nd birthday last year. My birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks (Mar 25th), so there is no better timing.
The hardest part of this recipe was the kneading and braiding the dough. It was super sticky. I tried to use different methods to knead it. I kneaded it as a bread and hand-pulled it like noodles Do whatever you can to stretch out that gluten. On top of all that mess, I decided as a fancy queen I needed to do a 6 strands braid, instead of the basic 3 strands. It was horribly hard, but the result was so worth it.
